I liked this book because it was unusual. I thought it was pretty accurate anout what Victorian life might have been like. I was touched at how the protagonist , a detective really cares for his (probably autistic) brother who is an astronomer. The only downside is that it is in the time of Jack the Ripper and people die...

The Music of the Spheres Elizabeth Redfern Books Reviews
If you are an amateur astronomer or have any interest in observational astronomy, the history of telescopes, or the history of astronomy, this is a must read! Even without the astronomy, it is still a thoughtfully plotted, well-paced, exciting piece of historical fiction. I can't tell you how many historical novels I have read about 18th-century France and England--but this is definitely the best. I found a used copy in a little bookstore in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, and spent my beach time reading--couldn't put it down except to enjoy the dark skies when the stars came out over the Caribbean sea.
This book was originally given to me by my uncle as a high school graduation gift. As a pre-emergent nerdie, I was fascinated by all the backgrounds and interactions and phenomena in the world of physics, chemistry and astronomy that are behind so many of the things we experience in daily life. The author's vocabulary sent me to the dictionary and thesaurus many times, and made me a killer at Scrabble! The book was highly educational and entertaining at the same time. Now, some 50 years later, our society has greatly advanced our understanding of all the sciences, but the insights provided in the book are essentially timeless, and still help us understand the implications and interactions of all the new knowledge we are accumulating. I ordered this book so I could give it to my 15-year-old nephew, who is also very interested in physics, chemistry, and the sciences in general.
This was one of my favorite books in high school. A great introduction to physics, astronomy and relativity.
reading this book shows the relation ship between mathematics relates to the earth, solar system and universe. It explains how math and music are related, and the orbits of the planets can all be calculated with the proper equation.
This Vol 1 is a magnificent journey...... an Volume 2 continues the journey...... Each volume presents a nexus of science and philosophy. The reader is left in splendid awe! Start with Vol 1 and be sure to get Vol 2, later.
Ought to be part of our basic education. Well written along with Volume 2.
In the last five years of the 18th Century, England is at war, defending the Lowlands and London is beset with spies, aristocratic French Royalist fugitives, who have fled the mob brutality of the French Revolution. These French spies are everywhere, as are modern men of science intent on recent discoveries in Astrology, fascinated by revelations uncovered by the powerful lens of the telescope. But this is London, so there is also murder afoot, namely the very particular murder of red-haired young prostitutes.
While French émigré astrologers spin their web of intrigue, two estranged brothers become involved in the intricate machinations of the Royalist spies, desperate to undermine England in the war and return to their homeland. These English brothers are central to the unfolding plot Jonathan, an official of the Home Office, and Alexander, a fervent astrologer. Alexander is drawn into the circle of the Montpellier's, who study the movement of the galaxy from a powerful telescope on their country estate, in hopes of discovering a planet they name "Serena". The Montpellier's, brother and sister, Guy and Auguste, are orbited by an assortment of nefarious characters who have their own subversive agendas.
As Jonathan seeks to discover the spies as well as the murderer of his young daughter, the first strangled red-haired prostitute, he falls into ill repute, ultimately endangering his prestigious position. And Alexander becomes more involved, albeit unwittingly, in the web of intrigue at the Montpellier's estate, most seriously damaged by his association with the expatriate spies because he is a victim of his own generous nature.
The novel ends in a cataclysm of violent acts, redeeming the faltering plot. The book loses impetus in the middle, so the increase in action renders the rest of the read more likable. The story line is finally tied together, but the main weakness in Music of the Spheres is that it is often more a well-practiced exercise than a harmonious composition.
I liked this book because it was unusual. I thought it was pretty accurate anout what Victorian life might have been like.
