Dorothy Dunnett's character Francis Crawford is a very addicting individual. This story outlines his pursuit of two lost children whose fate is in the hands of the evil Graham Reid Mallet, whom we have met previously. Dunnett's historical veracity and vocabulary are astounding -- so much in this one about Turkey and Islam. I love the education I receive in reading her work. Because this is my fourth book in the series, I have finally learned not to pass judgment on Francis' actions, because there are always many layers to the story that Dunnett reveals in a strategic (and sometimes provoking) way. I do have to say that this installment in the Lymond Chronicles was pretty brutal. They all are, in their way, but especially this one. I know Francis has to make difficult decisions to promote the greater good, but sometimes, wow. I always have to take a rest and read some light detective novel after reading a Dunnett book, but I do admire her greatly.

Pawn in Frankincense opens up shortly after the end of The Disorderly Knights, as Jerrott and Philippa track down Lymond on his search to find Francis' child, stolen by renegade Knight Graham Reed Malett and hidden somewhere in the heart of the Ottoman Empire. Francis uses his position as an emissary of France delivering gifts to Suleiman the Magnificent as an entrée into the mysterious world of the east as he and his companions continue their desperate search for Lymond's son. However, the deliciously evil Graham's schemes lead them on from one false lead to another, as the web is spun to bring Francis and troops further into Graham's evil web. Nothing and no one is as they seem, and the author throws many red herrings and surprises into her tale and eventually we discover that there are two blond, blue eyed children being sought. One child is Francis', who is father of the other?

Although separated, Lymond and his followers all end up in Constantinople, as Graham's plots come to fruition and Lymond, Jerrott, Archie and the mysterious Marthe with the striking resemblance to Lymond begin the fight of their lives in a real life chess game with deadly consequences for any who are "captured", and Francis battles to maintain his wits against the deadly addiction Graham's schemes have unknowingly afflicted him with.

As with the first three books in the series, Francis Crawford is a fascinating hero, and is as suave, debonair, flawed and fascinating as only a 16th Century version of James Bond could be. This book is filled with non-stop action and suspense and ends with quite a big surprise of a cliffhanger which will send the reader reaching for the next book in the series, The Ringed Castle (Lymond Chronicles, 5). A solid five stars and my favorite so far in the series.
Pawn in Frankincense brings to a boiling point issues raised in the first 3 books of the series. It can be read by itself, but I bet you will head for the first 3 just to figure out how Francis got to this juncture. Of course, new plots are introduced, but oh my what a ride.

England, France, Italy, Malta, Northern Africa, Turkey and spots in between, a mysterious woman, two children lost, and Lymond heading to Turkey as the Ambassador of France -- what can go wrong?

Of the 6 books, Pawn in Frankensense and Checkmate are my favorites. Not a casual read until it has been devoured about 5 times......

And you will still find new things you missed before!

I suffered with all the characters, through this very difficult phase of their harrowing lives, learning history of cultures, fashions, beliefs, times and places that are not usual to our own limp histories. Dunnett magically allows us to deepen our sensibilities and compassions, for people and events that are so complex and extreme, that our limits for human and humane behaviors are tried over and over, and many times I had to simple stop reading for a while and allow the stories and my inner responses to realign and regain balance . But this is the gift and art of all the best storytellers and artists, to help us grow in strength, in wisdom, in a divine sense of humor and whimsy, in the midst of our absurdities, past and present. I love these books and this Lymond character is totally engaging.
I love Dorothy Dunnett. There, I've said it. Her novels are like canvases (and since she was also a portrait painter, this makes sense). The books are written with a great deal of detail; her characters are well-drawn and complex.

Pawn in Frankincense is the 4th in the Lymond series. The twists and turns kept me turning pages, even though I've read this series probably 20 times. I have to say, that every time I read these novels, I find something new in each of them.

I have this book in hardcover, and because I've read it many times I was disappointed in the edition--it is very poorly proof read--I found a lot of typos all over the novel. If I knew who to send a complaint to, I would.

I recommend purchasing the trade paperback to read. I hope it's better proofed than the . It's well worth the read. A terrific read shouldn't be passed up.
To all those who dismiss historical fiction as glorified romanticism, I challenge them to read the Lymond Chronicles (of which this is the fourth installment of six) and not emerge amused, enlightened, educated and thoroughly in awe of Dorothy Dunnett. I am now in my fourth round of reading these books and still find twists of plot and nuances of character that are new to me. Whenever I attempt to read another author's historical fiction I must wait for several months to allow the enchantment of her writing skills to dissipate a bit or the other book sounds like a kindergarten primer. When you finish this series, don't despair. You can start the Niccolo series. And then read them all again, and again, and again. They've been my companions now for 25 years.
